What is ID.me and why should I have an account?
ID.me is a single sign-on provider that meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements. You do NOT need to create a new ID.me account specifically for Social Security services. You can use one ID.me account to access both government and private services.
Take control of your digital identity:
ID.me helps you prove your identity and group affiliation across multiple websites. It serves the same purpose as the physical ID cards you carry in your wallet – but for the internet.
They use bank-grade encryption to keep your personal information safe, and you always have control over what information gets shared.
What you need to do to establish an ID.me account:
The IRS works with ID.me, a technology provider, to provide authentication and identity verification for taxpayers and tax professionals accessing IRS applications.
Proving your identity involves uploading government documents, taking a video selfie, and filling out personal information. These identity verification services are crucial for the IRS to ensure millions of taxpayers and tax professionals can securely access IRS online services.
What can I access at the IRS website with my ID.me account?
You can view your tax records in your ONLINE INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNT. This is the fastest, easiest way to:
- View, print or download your transcripts
- Find out how much you owe
- Look at your payment history
- See your prior year adjusted gross income (AGI)
- View other tax records
- Information return documents to assist in filing your claims
- Retrieve your IP PIN
Changes for Social Security:
What to know about proving your identity:
Social Security is strengthening the process to prove identity related to direct deposit information. This applies to individuals who need to provide initial direct deposit information when applying for certain cash benefits and to someone already receiving benefits if they choose to later change their direct deposit information on our records. The easiest and most secure way is online with a personal my Social Security account.
NOTE: The public does not need to contact Social Security unless they need to change direct deposit information and cannot do it online. People will continue to receive their benefits and on schedule to the bank account information in Social Security’s records without needing to prove identity.
If applying for benefits or changing direct deposit information for existing benefits, the secure and most convenient way to prove identity is with Social Security’s online services using a personal my Social Security account.
What if I don’t transition to Login.gov or ID.me? Will that affect my Social Security payments?
Your Social Security benefits and Medicare premium deductions are not affected by the transition. However, to continue using our many convenient online services without interruption, you will need to transition to a Login.gov or ID.me account. If you do not transition your Social Security username to Login.gov or you don’t have an ID.me account, you will not have access to your personal my Social Security account.
